Serena Williams: An Icon Forever

Serena Williams announced her retirement from tennis in the September 2022 issue of Vogue. It is strongly suggested that this year's US open will be her last

Even though tennis will miss her dearly, she has clearly made her impact. Serena Williams will be an icon forever. Below are highlights of each US Open she dominated. From her first with her sister Venus to solo in 2022, she made sure that her performances will be cemented in your mind for years to come

(Serena, First US Open, 1999)

 In her Serenas first U.S. Open, she had to go against a running champion, Martina Hingis.  Martina Hingis was a veteran in 1999 who was brimming with confidence. But Serena had a point to prove. She left the championship with wins with straight sets. She announced herself as a force to be reckoned with.

Serena didn't win another Open until 2002. She won the French Open and Wimbledon that year too.  She finished off her wins. It came against her older sister Venus but Venus was proud of her sister. She also was infamous for the jumpsuit she wore. She drew worldwide attention for it and a lot of criticism.

She didn't regain the top spot until her third win. She did the final against Jelena Jancovic and won. even though, she was happy with her win, she was still wanting more. She didn't know she was closer to her double digit dreams than ever.

Williams made history in 2012. She is the third woman in history to win the U.S. Open, the Olympics and Wimbledon in the same season. All by 30! She is joined by her sister, Venus, and fellow competitor Steffi Graff.

In 2013, Serena was the queen of back to back wins. It was then that she started to be hailed as one of the greatest of all time. She shut down comments about her age being an obstacle.

She had a three peat of winning her third consecutive US open in a row. Williams was emotional at the time because she won in the same court she won her first US Open in.

She ended her career with a bittersweet end. She lost in the third round of the U.S. Open this year too Ajla Tomljavonic.  It was an over 3 hour match which she fought strong until the end. She ended the match with thanking her fans and her family, particularly her sister Venus. She explains " There wouldn't be a Serena without a Venus, So thank you Venus.  She's the only reason Serena ever existed. She continues on and says "This has been an incredible journey I've ever been on". 

 

Serena Williams will forever be iconic in sports history. She is a role model who has defied many odds and always stayed strong and confident in her craft.
